The main use of mu’ HaqwI’ (“word surgeon”) is analyzing Klingon words and their components, but it also serves as a dictionary and it contains some handy charts.
How do I use it?
mu’ HaqwI’ is a simple application which doesn’t use documents. It rather displays just a main window and a menu bar which give you access to all functions the application has to offer. There’s a popup menu in the lower lefthand corner of mu’ HaqwI’s window which controls the mode of operation. The choices are: Analyzer, Dictionary, Verb Prefixes, Verb Suffixes, Noun Suffixes, Miscellaneous and About.
Analyzer
The analyzer will parse your input looking for grammatically correct Klingon words. It will then present you with the results, that is, the components of the analyzed words and their translation.
Enter the word(s) to be analyzed in the text field at the top of the window and click the ‘Analyze’ button or press Return. You may enter several words at once, seperated by spaces. Punctuation characters (e.g. .,:;!? ) are treated like spaces. The results are displayed in the scrollable list occupying most of the window. If there are several plausible compositions for a word, they are shown seperated by a single dotted line. Different words are seperated by double lines.
Dictionary
The dictionary will take your input and match it against at vocabulary list. It will display all words which contain the search string, either in the word itself or in the translation. The search is case-insensitive.
Enter the strings to look for (seperated by spaces) in the text field at the top of the window and click the ‘Lookup’ button or press Return. If you leave the field blank, all words are displayed.
Verb Prefixes, Verb Suffixes, Noun Suffixes, Miscellaneous and About
These are just static charts. Look and enjoy.

Automatic correction
When you click the button in analyzer or dictionary mode, you may notice that the text you entered changes slightly (apart from the whole text field being highlited for comfort). In analyzer mode, the text is forced to the Klingon alphabet, e.g. «BoRTas» will turn into «bortaS» and «gic» will become «ghIch». In addition, all apastrophes ('‘’´`) are changed to the standard curly apastrophe (’). In dictionary mode, only the apastrophe conversion takes place. The search is case-insensitive anyway.

The analyzer will only recognize words which are constructed according to one of the following patterns:

Drag And Drop
mu’ HaqwI’ supports the new drag and drop technology. You can drag out text from the edit field in analyzer and dictionary mode as well as all the charts. mu’ HaqwI’ accepts text drags to the edit field. You may drop the text anywhere in the window. If you drop it outside the text field (i.e. there’s no vertical line blinking), the dropped text will replace the entire contents of the field. There’s a saveguard that will disable this function when you drag text from mu’ HaqwI’ itself and the mouse hasn’t left the window yet (i.e., when there’s no destination feedback). You may drop text even while mu’ HaqwI’ displays one of the charts. It will automatically switch to analyzer mode when you drop the text.
Hidden Features
You can use the arrow keys and the page up/page down keys to scroll through the list in analyzer and dictionary mode. You can switch between the charts with the arrow keys, the return key and the page up/page down keys. You can switch to any mode with Command-Number, e.g. -1 for Analyzer, -2 for Dictionary, -7 for About.
Importing the Vocabulary
In this Mac version, the vocabulary is integrated with the application file. To allow for adjustments and customisation, this distribution also contains the plain text version of the vocabulary - the file ‘mutay.txt’ (mu’tay’ - vocabulary). You may edit this file with your favourite text editor (but make sure to save it as text-only). To put your changes into effect, you have to import the changed version into mu’ HaqwI’ using the ‘Import…’ item in the ‘File’ menu. When you select the menu item, a Standard Open dialog will appear. Select the file ‘mutay.txt’ and click ‘Open’.
NOTE: Importing is a potentially dangerous operation. If you messed up the ‘mutay.txt’ file, select the wrong file in the file selection dialog or some nasty error happens during the operation, your copy of mu’ HaqwI’ will end up without a useable vocabulary, so ALWAYS make a backup copy before importing the vocabulary.
Other Versions
A portable, character based version is also available.
If you’d like to port the GUI version to another platform (e.g. Windows, OS/2, X11, NeXT), please let me know. If there is enough demand, I’ll dive deep into my past and do a ATARI ST GUI version myself. But I won’t do this unless there are enough people requesting it personally, so if you want this to happen, drop me a line.
